Paul Mallard Guest Post: Don’t Get Stuck - avoiding decision paralysis

Life is full of choices. Most of them have minor significance, but others can affect the rest of our lives. Because we want to please God, the choices we make matter to us. But how can we be sure that we are making a wise and God-pleasing decision? We hear so many confusing voices that we can become paralysed with fear. Isn’t it better to choose to do nothing rather than doing something we will regret? If we get it wrong we might damage ourselves and the people we love. We might end up missing out on God’s best and spending our lives in a spiritual dead end.

So, controlled by our fears, we decide to do nothing. We have entered the cul-de-sac of decision paralysis.

But we don’t need to stay there.

There are clear biblical principles which we can prayerfully apply so that our decisions are wise and God honouring. There is the help we can find through the advice of godly friends and the whisper of God’s Spirit through our consciences and our circumstances.

But beyond this there is the assurance that God will guide us. He will not desert us even if we get it wrong. He never leaves us stranded. He wants us to trust him. Wrestling with questions of guidance is one of the ways in which we get to know God better. This is what we were created for. The most important thing about our spiritual journey is not the route that we take but the Guide that we follow. On this journey we are supposed to come to know and trust God.

So stop being afraid and trust your Guide to lead you in his ways.
