Inter-Varsity Press and the Tyndale Fellowship’s Study Group for Philosophy of Religion are pleased to announce this year’s winners of the ‘Early-Career Philosopher of Religion’ competition.
Entrants of the competition were asked to answer the essay question:
What does it mean that God is good?
IVP and Tyndale are delighted to announce that the winners were:
1st place – Todd DeRose
2nd place – Seyma Yazici
Both winners received vouchers for use on the IVP website. Here's what they thought about the contest:
I would like to thank Inter-Varsity Press and the Tyndale Fellowship for organising this essay contest which brings up such significant issues of philosophy of religion. It’s tremendously encouraging for early-career philosophers to participate in this kind of contest, let alone your work being acknowledged! In this wise, I would like to express my gratitude to the organizers for selecting my work for the second prize. I am truly honoured to receive it. I also owe special thanks to Prof. Daniel J. Hill whose book Divinity and Maximal Greatnessinspired me in developing my ideas for this year’s essay contest. I hope this contest will further contribute to the comparative studies in theology and philosophy of religion.
Seyma Yazici
"First and foremost, I want to thank John Pittard both for his mentorship and for his contributions to my project, "Moral Perfection and Non-Psychopathy." Beyond all the constructive criticism and philosophical insight, he once exhorted me to pursue excellence rather than greatness. This subtle shift in mindset has started to pay real dividends as I work toward a full-fledged career in academic philosophy. Winning this award is a pleasantly concrete indication of progress.
Theological predication, including with respect to God's moral attributes, is a topic that feels timeless to me. It is one that connects my more historical scholarship on George Berkeley to my more contemporary scholarship in analytic theology. I expect similar debates, particularly those concerning univocalism, to endure well into the future.
I look forward to presenting at the Tyndale Conference, whenever and however it takes place."
Todd DeRose
